December 3

Since the last post, our group has accomplished a lot with regards to research and locating prospective places to put in our project. Also, we have decided on a more concise direction to proceed with on our project. I have been doing more research about buildings and monuments on Ottawa and looking at what could be potentially used in our project. I also looked at some apps that we could possibly model our game after. After looking through a few, I have seen a few examples of what works well and what does not. This will help us in the development of our project.

3 December (Rob)

Since my last post we have achieved a lot in the research section of our project. I reached the deadline for my first task and by that I managed to finalise the draft research notes and add appropriate sources to each definition and point. There is still more room for improvement on the research but we have a great point to work from. We also discussed gathering a list of places we need for the GPS to get started on that and a list of historic places has been writen up.

The next step would be to go and plot the points at those spots. Bearing in mind that these are just initial places. There is definitely room for more discussion and to possibly add more minor places as right now the places have seen major historical events. This would add more to the project but for now the task at hand is getting the major places done.

19 Movember

My job over the past week or so had been to look around online to check out our options for things like a mobile website for people, as well as a template for a forum of some kind that our players can use to discuss the game.

In other words, things are still developing; we keep changing the finer details of our project, trying to find something that we really like, but work is progressing overall at a pretty decent rate

November 19th

Like Simon I've been really busy with my other courses, as well as working just about every possible minute I'm not in class due to some big sale at my work. We talked over some more ideas regarding platforms for the technology, also the "People Are Places Are People" sparked some interesting thoughts about how to use riddles in the game. I plan to do some work into plot narratives to drive the player forward through the game.

So I haven't managed to get too much done in the past two weeks on account of all my classes rounding down and working all weekend long so the map is still a work in progress but since the others are collecting more information right now I will have a more elaborate map made. Despite not having done much as of late once i get resources from the others I will be able to get far more accomplished.

November 19 (Rob)

We are still making great and steady progress on the project. This week also gave us a snapshot at more indepth group work and problem solving-by this I'm talking about the "People Are Place Are People" assignment. I think we are all happy by the way it worked out. We had no conflict and learned that breaking up tasks and bouncing ideas off of each other works best. Even for the members that weren't there on the day it was assigned, helped us in trying to solve that tough riddle about the 8 x 3 clue. I think that this was a very useful exercise in helping us see what works and what deosn't for our group. The reason I am writing so much about it is because it acts as something along the lines of a training exercise for or prelude to the actual project. It just made me more confident that problems will be solved and we will make a lot of progress.
We also discussed setting up a website fro the group and how the logistics of the project will work. We talked about using a GPS machine that I think Roderick has. That would make it a lot easier too if there was one that we didn't have to worry about renting and we already have a memeber expiereinced in it (in a way it's like crowd-sourcing).
As for research I found a bit more on major themes in the area of Canadian History we are focusing on-an example is WWI linking to major people we have researched. The next stop would be to relate everything back to Ottawa and the Valley

First Update : so... where we at?

So we've decided to take the direction of federal development in the Ottawa area, we'll be looking at the people and events that shaped this nation and how they were interconnected. We are still working on the linking part but I'm currently working on mapping out people in a geographic sense (locations associated to them on google maps) and from there we will start playing around with the narrative. The parts we already have mapped out are John A. Macdonald, Thomas D'arcy Mcgee, Lester B. Pearson and the centenial flame and the war memorial. We're working on getting more locations/people but right now we're just getting everything ironed out.

November 5th (Remember, remember...)

This week, we all got together to discuss how we can narrow down the topic on which our game will be based. We talked about things such as linking elements of Ottawa's history together. Ultimately what came of this is that we determined we'd use certain people or places as "nodes", tieing them together somehow would become part of developping the game's narrative. I think what we still need to work on is building said narrative, as this is where the procedural rhetoric will come into play, because the people and places we decide to use in our game will be the ones the game tells the audience were most essential to the topic which we've chosen.

November 5

This week, our group got together and discussed the future of our project. We looked at different ways in which we could make our topic more specific a feasible due to the time restraints and limited resources. Furthermore, we dealt with how the game could work and different ways to attract players to our game. After meeting with the group, I looked into some more events and buildings that could possibly include in our game and website. I took down a few notes on those topics for later reference. Also, to move the project forward, I believe our group should point out each individual topic that will be put into the game so we can outline how the game will progress.

November 5 (Rob)

This week we discussed how to narrow down our topic and one idea which is being pursued is linking John A. MacDonald/Confederation/D'Arcy McGee to the Cenntenial Flame/Lester B Pearson. I looked into this and wrote up some notes and with more research it seems like it can be done. My notes so far are just sort of a rough draft and at points I worked backwards to see if I could find out more. There are one or two dead ends but that can be circumvented. It was interesting to see how some things can be related that, otherwise, people wouldn't give a second thought to. I think the next step after these initial notes are cleaned up a bit and stronger links are made, I will be able to plot them on a goole map just as a reference.

Testing It Out

Looks like this is working... Haven't experimented with putting up pictures or anything yet, but the basic text tools work fine.

Hopefully this will work for everyone.

Edit: I assume that the labels option is similar to tagging keywords or something. I suggest that everyone labels their name, so it's easier to search for later.
